Molten salt reactors are a type of nuclear fission reactor in which the primary coolant—and even the nuclear fuel itself—is a molten salt mixture. As one of the six advanced reactor concepts in the fourth generation of nuclear reactors, molten salt reactors are renowned for their safety (operating at atmospheric pressure), excellent neutron economy, and high thermal efficiency. In molten salt reactors, nuclear-grade graphite is typically used as both a reflector and a moderator, coming into direct contact with the molten salt. Due to the porous nature of graphite, the molten salt can permeate its pores under molten salt reactor operating conditions, leading to changes in graphite’s mechanical and thermal properties and accelerating graphite degradation. Consequently, graphite’s permeability has a profound impact on the operational characteristics and service life of molten salt reactors. At present, research and development efforts on nuclear graphite materials are primarily focused on high‑temperature gas‑cooled reactors; there is no commercially available nuclear graphite specifically designed for molten salt reactors. Therefore, developing and screening nuclear graphite that meets the stringent requirements for molten salt reactors has become an indispensable area of research for the commercialization of molten salt reactors.
